Kenyan President Kenyatta Declared Winner In Repeat Poll

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has been declared winner of the controversial October 26 repeat election.

The Daily Nation reports that the chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Wafula Chebukati, on Monday declared the results of the poll free, fair, and credible.

According to the electoral commission, Mr. Kenyatta won the repeat poll with over 7.4 million votes, or 98 percent of the vote.

The incumbent president’s main challenger, Raila Odinga of the National Super Alliance, boycotted the repeat election, demanding that he would not participate unless certain IEBC officials were sacked, among other demands.

It would be recalled that the original August 8 election was declared null by the Kenyan Supreme Court due to irregularities in polling. A repeat election was then slated for October 26.

Mr. Kenyatta and his deputy, William Ruto, is scheduled to be sworn in 14 days after the declaration. However, if Mr. Odinga files a petition disputing the results, the swearing-in ceremony could be further delayed.
