There is an increased in the crisis within Ghana’s leading opposition, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), seems to be worsening as some aggrieved members of the party call for the suspension of the General Secretary, Kwabena Agyapong. This comes only weeks after the party suspended its Chairman indefinitely.
Reports indicate that a group within the party has written to the party leadership asking for the suspension of Mr. Agyapong who they accuse of disregarding the decision of the authorities to suspend party chairman Paul Afoko.
“Kwabena Agyepong has rubbished, and keeps rubbishing the suspension of Afoko from his chairmanship. This in our view is an act of mischievous contempt for the authority of the party as a whole, including its elders, its leadership, and its structures,” the statement said.
The party’s disciplinary committee has since met in a crunch meeting on Thursday, to discuss the petition.
A faction within the party has sworn not to recognize the suspension of Chairman Afoko. This comes barely a year to general elections next year. The NPP lost the last election and took to the Supreme Court to challenge the results.
