Revealed: Why Fulani herdsmen always attack Enugu

The reason southeast state of Enugu regularly comes under attack from Fulani herdsmen has been revealed just as Ebonyi people have rejected the marauders’ activities in their state.

Leader of the Hausa community in Enugu, Abubakar Sambo was quoted by Vanguard as telling the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that 90 per cent of herdsmen moving from the north to the south-east and south-south regions pass through the busy 9th Mile Corner, Ngwo, Enugu corridor to get to where they are going.

”Enugu State is witnessing the spate of herdsmen attack because it is a major gateway to and from the northern part of the country to the south-east and south-south regions where these herdsmen come from.

“Before you access any part of the south-east or south-south, you must pass through Enugu. There are many routes which the herdsmen use to connect the state. Some of them come in through Kogi State-Uzo Uwani local government area of Enugu State. That was the route the herdsmen that attacked Nimbo used.

Enugu governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi may have to find a way to stop Fulani herdsmen from passing through the state.
“Most of them that are migrant herdsmen decided to settle in some rural communities in Enugu State while on transit. This scenario is what i think, make Enugu prone to incessant herdsmen clashes,” Sambo told NAN.

From Sambo’s observation that Enugu is ‘in the way’ of the Fulani herdsmen, then hopes of attacks ending soon in the state might be premature.
